GovAIaaS capabilities

What can governed AI help an organisation do?

The capability architecture groups specialist AI functions by the job they perform: understand, strengthen, discover, assure and operationalise.

Current terminology

The original Skills visual uses AI Approve. The current governed wording is Permission-to-Rely Assessment, because an AI system must not imply that it holds human or institutional approval authority. “Decision & Action” is treated as the operationalisation stage rather than an autonomous AI decision.

Understand

AI Analyse

Break down complexity, identify structure and trace relationships among claims, evidence, assumptions and decisions.

Typical outputs

  • claim decomposition
  • evidence map
  • pattern and gap analysis
  • uncertainty register

Understand

AI Compare

Compare options, policies, scenarios or documents using the same unit, criteria and consequence frame.

Typical outputs

  • comparison matrix
  • trade-off analysis
  • same-unit assessment
  • ranked alternatives with caveats

Strengthen

AI Improve

Refine an idea, plan, policy or argument by correcting gaps, ambiguity and avoidable weakness.

Typical outputs

  • revised structure
  • stronger evidence linkage
  • implementation improvements
  • clarified limitations

Strengthen

AI Defend

Stress-test assumptions, vulnerabilities, counterarguments, failure modes and attack surfaces.

Typical outputs

  • red-team challenge
  • weak-link register
  • risk scenarios
  • defence and mitigation plan

Discover

AI Discover

Search for hidden connections, candidate mechanisms, emerging opportunities and alternative explanations.

Typical outputs

  • candidate mechanism set
  • research questions
  • discriminating tests
  • opportunity map

Assure

Permission-to-Rely Assessment

Evaluate whether the output is sufficiently supported for the stated purpose, audience and consequence level.

Typical outputs

  • reliance recommendation
  • conditions and exclusions
  • confidence and uncertainty statement
  • required human approvals

Assure

AI Assure

Confirm traceability, check that required controls were applied and preserve the audit trail.

Typical outputs

  • control checklist
  • source and transformation trace
  • exception register
  • assurance summary

Operationalise

Decision & Action

Convert supported findings into decision rules, responsibilities, implementation pathways and review points.

Typical outputs

  • decision pathway
  • operating plan
  • roles and controls
  • monitoring and review cycle
